"Discovering that I could use 3D rapid prototyping to develop products ended up making much more sense than creating a physical sculpt out of clay for many reasons." - Danny Choo
By now, you\'ve must be overwhelmed from Eiji\'s arrival in Hobby Chan. Eiji, whom Danny Choo described as the engineering genius, is a good addition to the SMART dolls as a male counterpart. We can always admire the final product but the process of creating this masterpiece deserve its own tribute.
Eiji, along with his counterparts, are 100% made and assembled in Japan under the supervision of Danny Choo himself. You can read more about the production process from Danny\'s article here. But, a specific part that I\'d like to point out is Danny\'s constant appraisal for 3D printing as a tool for rapid prototyping. The 3D prints were then used as a reference for the finished mold products ready to be assembled.
3D printing is a process of creating three dimensional model involving thin layers of strands combined. A 3D printer is a regular printer but with tons of awesomeness attached to it.

3D printing has revolutionized the way products are made. As an interior architect, I no longer need to physically sculpt my concept and can now conceptualise in a form of 3D modeling. 3D modelling can all be done on the computer. It is a different set of skill on its own - away from traditional sculpturing. Danny Choo had the right thought in mind to approach this mind-boggling technology. With a single click, your products are on your way. Found a mistake a long the way? No problem, easily modify the file to suit your needs.
The quote says it all. It is a quick, productive and an efficient way to develop a product.
The "Smart" in Smart Doll is no joke. Not only the finishing product blurs the line between sci-fi and reality, the production is extremely sophisticated. Please take a hard look on Danny\'s step by step production process on his blog. I am extremely impressed. He breaks away from the traditional warehouse manufacturing and dives into the future completely!
It is a great pleasure to have Eiji in Hobby Chan - and to see it in the flash!. By introducing Danny\'s smart doll here, it opens a new door to future techniques of manufacturing in my opinion. As a person who loves taking things apart, look forward to more manufacturing analysis in the future. Stay tuned!
